When I started learning to drive, the teacher showed me how to keep myself the right distance from the kerb by using a certain point on the wiper blades.
Which worked pretty well, until IT RAINED.
What he'd wanted to teach me was how to align myself in my lane. What he actually taught me was to steer according to where the kerb sat in relation to that point.
He'd given me a proxy to focus on, which simplified the task, but only up to a point. And after that point it was a bit chaotic for a while.
The same thing happens in awakening. whenever we focus on a proxy as a measure of awakeness. For example, how a relationship looks, or physical pain, or…
Have you ever found your focus set on a proxy that stopped serving you? Maybe you've just spotted one now?
